“According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.” (1 Corinthians 3:10, KJV)
Paul, writing by divine inspiration, employs the powerful metaphor of construction to describe the life of faith and ministry. The foundation is none other than Jesus Christ Himself (v. 11)—unshakable, eternal, and laid once for all. Yet upon this sure foundation, every believer becomes a builder. As classic commentators have noted, Paul’s warning is not merely architectural but eschatological—our works shall be made manifest at the judgment seat of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:10), where fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. In a dispensational understanding, this passage underscores the distinct stewardship entrusted to Church-Age saints: a solemn responsibility to rightly divide the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15), discerning God’s progressive revelation across the ages while clinging steadfastly to the gospel of grace.
